Hypocrisy: A taste of extreme divinity
25/01/10 || Trauma
I love me some Hypocrisy. I got into these guys with “The final chapter.” I’ve dug a lot of even their later stuff, as well, “Catch 22” included. Close to the top even. That is a good album. The couple after that, though, I don’t think so highly of. “The Arrival” was fairly mediocre. As was “Virus”. They contain their stand-out tracks as this is Hypocrisy we’re talking about here. They know how to write good metal, just not always impeccably throughout an album.
After a good four years (almost as long as it’s been taking me to write this review, fuuuuuuck), the result of Peter’s never-ending need to work and perform with his Pain project, Hypocrisy are back with “A taste of extreme divinity”. Number one, no intro track. Thank you. “Valley of the damned” is a great starter, and it really does grow on you after multiple listens. “Hang him high” is a pretty good meshing of their melodic leanings along with their older style. I’m not quite as thrilled with “Solar empire”. It’s either going to be one of the weaker tracks for me, or a really slow grower. “Weed out the week” is one of the highlights on this album for me. Very good, very melodic song. I have a small complaint about “No tomorrow”, and it’s mostly that it feels way too… boring. It sounds a lot like something off of “The final chapter”, but at the same time doesn’t seem to really go anywhere.
“Global domination”. That song along should be the most fantastic song put to plastic. It should also do exactly what it states. It doesn’t. Hold your horses, there buddy. It’s a good song, just not quite as awesome as the title would have you believe. “Taste the extreme divine” makes me further appreciate the fact that Horgh is drumming for the band with the blasts. You need blasts in your metal sometimes and it’s delivered. It’s usually about now that album begin to wear down, isn’t it? Yeah, that’s not gonna happen here. “Alive”, “The quest”, “Tame-filled with fear”, and “Sky’s falling down” finish off well enough. I will admit the latter half of the album is by far less interesting than the beginning half. However, Hypocrisy has managed to create one monster of a grower. I can see myself liking the album more and more as time goes on. Thank Satan the beginning tracks were able to help keep the momentum going through to the end.
It’s been a long time coming, I guess, but Hypocrisy has managed to make another impeccably consistent album in my eyes. You’re probably wondering where this review has been since this came out ages ago. Well, fuck you, I’m a full-time student, man-whore, and asshole with a full-time career as well. To sum up, I like this album and so should you.
